GetJar announced 1 billion app download

Posted by BeyondSoftConsulting on June 8, 2010

SAN MATEO, USA and LONDON, UK, June 8, 2010 – GetJar (www.getjar.com), the world’s second largest app store, announced today that it has smashed through the 1 billion app download barrier. GetJar’s announcement comes as a landmark moment for the mobile industry as this is the first and only time that a cross-platform apps store has clocked over 1 billion downloads and second time ever for any app store to reach such a milestone.

The record-breaking, billionth download moment happened on June 7th at 11:02 AM  – Geodelic, an app that discovers restaurants, retailers and attractions nearby, was downloaded on an Android handset.

Ilja Laurs, CEO and founder, GetJar comments: “We’re delighted to have reached this milestone in mobile app history. As a team, we’re dedicated to driving the app market forward through an open approach. We’ve supported over 60,000 apps from developers across all major platforms, including Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian and our open philosophy has been integral to our continued growth and the development within the industry. We’re looking forward to the next billion downloads.”

Some Interesting GetJar Stats:

GetJar’s app store launched on March 23, 2004 and has rapidly grown in leaps and bounds, announcing in July 2009 that it had hit half a billion downloads – hot on the heels of Apple’s app store who had reached this only a few months earlier.

The first app ever to be uploaded on GetJar was ‘Just Yak’ – an app designed for the old Ericsson T610 mobile, on March 25, 2005.

The most downloaded app of all time on GetJar is Facebook’s mobile site shortcut, which provides a fast and easy way to access Facebook’s mobile website on nearly any handset or platform. It has been downloaded more than 61million times since launch late last year.

The most popular app is mobile messenger application, eBuddy, who recently surpassed a landmark 50 million downloads on GetJar with the help of GetJar’s Pay Per Download (PPD) mobile advertising service. Other popular apps include social networking and messaging apps Nimbuzz, Mig33 and Cncted, a mobile web browser – Opera Mini, Google, Yahoo! Mobile, and Fandango.

Over the last five years there have also been many surprise hits on GetJar, including the popularity of religious apps such as the ‘Bible’ app, which offers users access to the Bible’s entire contents through their mobile phone. It was downloaded more than 398,000 times in its first month alone. Islamic app ‘Azan’ has also proven a massive success, downloaded over 1.5 million times.

Dictionary, a simple app developed for feature phones by a sole developer in India, Vikrant Chavan, achieved over 3 million downloads since launch. Mig33 and Snaptu are also examples of small developer shops that were able to build their business and even get funding, partially due to their explosive growth on GetJar.

Over the past year, GetJar has tripled its headcount, quadrupled downloads per month and maintained its profitability despite a challenging economic environment.

About GetJar

GetJar is the world’s second largest apps store, second only to the Apple App Store, with over 1 billion downloads to date. The company’s key point of difference is its open market approach , which allows it to deliver applications for both feature phones and smartphones across all major platforms such as Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Symbian among others. The company provides more than 65,000 mobile applications to consumers in more than 200 countries. In 2009 GetJar won the Meffy, Tiecon50 and Mobile Excellence awards for its achievements and products. GetJar is backed by Accel Partners and is headquartered in Silicon Valley with offices in the UK and Lithuania. For more information: www.getjar.com and follow us on Twitter @getjar.
