Android Market beats Apple App Store growth

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 12, 2011

New Mexico Business Weekly, January 12, 2011- Apple Inc. still has by far the most apps available but rivals are rapidly stocking competing stores, led by Google Inc.’s Android Market.

Research company Distimo said that Apple’s app store was just the fourth fastest growing last year in the U.S., behind Google’s Android, Research in Motion Ltd.’s Blackberry App World and Nokia Oyj’s Ovi Store.

Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) growth was sixfold in 2010, hitting 130,000 apps by year’s end.

Nokia tripled the number of offerings it has to 25,000 and as did Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) whose BlackBerry grew to 18,000 apps.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) meanwhile doubled the number of apps available for the iPhone in the U.S. to about 300,000.

The number of free apps available overall rose last year while the price of paid apps fell, the report said.

“The high download volumes of free applications appear to attract developers to switch to monetization methods other than paid,” Distimo analysts Hendrik Koekkoek and Gert Jan Spriensma wrote.

Apple operates a full-service retail store in the ABQ Uptown retail center in Albuquerque at Louisiana and Indian School Road NE.

Android Captures Market Share, But Apple Strikes Back

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 11, 2011

ResourceNation, January 11, 2011- ComScore released their mobile subscriber reports this week that profiles the percentage of smartphone subscribers by platform. From the months of August 2010 to November 2010, Android has experienced a 6.4% growth in smartphone subscribers. Likely led by the iPhone competitor HTC Evo 4g, Android Android training is making a push to be the “Microsoft” of Mobile OS. This growth comes especially heart wrenching for Apple, whose platform iOS lost the #2 market share to Android.

However, Android Android training can barely sneak a laugh because Apple is expected to announce the release of the iPhone for Verizon. This announcement comes at the perfect time for Apple; its iOS only saw .8% growth in platform adoption from August to November. “The largest cell phone company in the U.S. will soon sell the world’s best-selling smart phone,” according to Bloomberg. This will be a huge partnership for both companies, and a big step forward Apple. Apple has been known to keep allegiance to their manufacturers and partners, but AT&T and Apple have had their differences, and it seems Apple has had enough.

iPhone is seeing adoption with business professionals who are becoming more comfortable with touch technology; and Android Android training is being marketed as an iOS (iPhone) alternate. On the flipside Blackberry is hurting. They have fallen in a very small niche’, and as Apple and Google are marketing to the everyday user, RIM is dropping the ball. Perhaps even more frightening is RIM’s loss of 4.1% market share with their platform. The comScore data suggests that the majority of this market share was lost to Android adopters.

The future of the mobile space has 3 main players, but it is very likely we will be seeing Apple and Android surpass RIM in the coming months. The market share data doesn’t show consumer preferences, as many cell phone users are tied to a contract with their phone systems. RIM holds the #1 spot in the mobile market, but it is very likely that as Android Android training and Apple continue to gain buzz we will see RIM customers not renewing their contracts with Blackberry and upgrading their mobile OS.

Android tablet sales seen matching iPad

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 10, 2011

Sacramento Business Journal, January 10, 2011- Analysts at BMO Capital Markets said Monday that in the second half tablet computers powered by Google Inc.’s Android operating system will match sales of Apple Inc.’s industry-leading iPad.

Forbes reported that BMO analyst Keith Bachman said during a conference call following release of the report, “The number of players participating in Android tablets Android training will replicate the success Google has had on phones.”

Apple has virtually owned the tablet market since it released the iPad last year, with BMO estimating that the iPad accounted for about 13 million of the 15 million to 16 million tablets sold in 2010. The firm is predicting that 45 million tablets will be sold this year.

But news of upcoming tablets dominated last week’s Consumer Electronics Show and BMO predicts that nearly 20 manufacturers will introduce at least 25 to 30 versions that run on Android Android training this year. Among them will be tablets from Hewlett-Packard Co. ( NYSE:HPQ), Motorola Inc. (Nasdaq: MOT), Fujitsu Ltd., AsusTek Computer Inc., Toshiba Corp., Lenovo Group, HTC Corp., Viewsonic Corp. and Vizio Inc.

A version of Android Android training optimized for the tablet that is nicknamed “Honeycomb” is expected from Google in the spring, which is when BMO thinks the tablet sales will start to take off.

Apple has an 1,800-employee campus in Elk Grove.

CES 2011 Hands-on: NEC dual-screen Android prototype

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 9, 2011

Gadgetell, Jan 9, 2011- Android tablets are the norm at CES, and have been for quite some time. Most are simply big slabs with Android shoved onto the screen to make it useable. NEC took a different route with this Android tablet Android training, opting to use two screens to make a slightly more interesting device.

The NEC Android Cloud Communicator Android training is just a prototype right now, but shows what could be done with two screens. The device was shown off as an eReader for what looked to be a Korean magazine. On one screen there was a full page, on the other there was a zoomed in shot of that page. Not the best way to read a magazine, but not bad. Moving around the device was a bit slow, but since it had two screens running off a Cortex A8 with 384MB of RAM, that’s not very surprising.

Unfortunately both screens were resistive, all but requiring the use of a stylus, I could still use fingers, but had to actually press which felt strange after so long. Again, this is still a prototype, NEC isn’t sure it will ever bring such a device to market. I can’t imaging it doing very well like this, but it’s a nice example of how two touch screens can work in a single device.

Five Technology Trends to Watch in 2011

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 5, 2011

Xconomy, Jan. 5, 2011- “Real” 4G Mobile broadband. Verizon recently launched its 4G LTE network (via laptop modem cards). The Verizon network speed dwarfs the “4G” networks being advertised by Sprint and T-Mobile. Verizon’s 4G will be users’ first taste of true mobile broadband and will further drive mobile data usage and the percentage of time users spend on the mobile Internet. The first 4G LTE handsets will be introduced mid-year and will be lighting fast compared to 3G models. Verizon’s 4G deployment combined with its rumored access to the iPhone market will place substantial pressure on AT&T to accelerate its 4G rollout with exciting new (likely Android-based)Android training handsets.

Speech recognition. Voice input into mobile devices will start to become more mainstream. Companies like Audience are enabling the reduction of background noise on handsets, driving much greater speech recognition accuracy. At the same time, the Android platform has legions of end users effectively Android“training” Google’s speech recognition engines (in multiple languages) via Google’s voice search. Speech recognition quality will get better and better and voice input will start to feel more intuitive and efficient compared to touch screen typing

Solar industry progress. After a two-year drought of capital access and valuations challenges, a number of solar start-ups will have weathered the storm and start to show real progress on commercial deployments, manufacturing capacity and competitive costs per kilowatt hour. While it is unlikely this sector will be positioned to see new IPOs, a few early winners will emerge and bring new investor enthusiasm to the sector.

“See what I see”. Apple’s Facetime technology will expand its footprint and be enabled across multiple devices and beyond just WiFi. While video conversations will be common, the more mainstream use will be providing a video window to another person to “see what I see”- e.g., a concert, a document, a product, a meeting, etc. These video interactions will start to become commonplace.

Biotech M&A. Biotech sector deal making should heat up as the large pharma companies face increasing pressure to fill their R&D pipelines and mitigate the impact of drugs going off patent. While the IPO market for biotech may remain lukewarm, there should be more and more big deal making for attractive clinical programs as well as acquisitions by the large players.
