Google Translate app hits Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on February 8, 2011

Los Angeles Times, February 8,2011- Google Translate is now available on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.

The voice and text translation application has long been available in mobile app form for phones running Google’s own Android operating system, but hasn’t until today been available as an iOS app.

The Web search giant did, however, roll out a Google Translate HTML5 mobile site all the way back in August of 2008, which allowed iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users to use many of the same features available on Android devices.

One feature not avilable on the iOS version of the app is the experimental Conversation Mode, which (for Android users) allows two people who speak two different languages to speak into a phone with the phone translating back to them in their respective tongues so a conversation can be held.

With Google Translate, users speak a word or phrase into their i-devices in one language and the app produces a translation via a computer-generated voice or text.

The app can accept voice input in 15 different languages and translate back to users in 50 languages. The computer-generated speech function can speak back to a user in 23 languages, Google said.

Text translations provided by the app can be zoomed in for easier reading or sharing on screen.

The release is Google’s fourth for the iOS since September after the arrivals of Google Voice, Google Latitude and Google Places with Hotpotfor the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The Google Translate app is a free download and requires iOS 3.0 or later — which means it works with even first-generation iPhones — and is in Apple’s App Store now.

Hot Smartphones Drive Western Market

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 30, 2011

infoSync, 30 January 2011- We take a look at the current mobile market shakeup and how hot smartphones drive the Western market forward.

Nokia describes the mobile market as an environment that is intensely competitive and plagued by component shortages. The Finnish manufacturer saw a 2.4% decline in unit shipments in Q4 2010 year-over-year, despite smartphone introductions such as the Nokia N8 and Nokia C7. These models contributed to a 38% increase in smartphone shipments for the company year-over-year, but feature phone shipments took a significant hit.

Apple and ZTE, on the other hand, increased their year-over-year unit shipments by 86.2% and 76.8% respectively. IDC reports that ZTE is succeeding in its Chinese home market, steadily spreading to developing regions such as Africa and Latin America as well as making inroads in developed markets such as Western Europe, the U.S. and Japan.

While Apple and ZTE aren’t directly comparable, they do share one overall goal: to rule the 4G era. ZTE has been rapidly expanding in both the GSM and CDMA worlds in recent years, and naturally wants to become a key player in the new 4G LTE era. And as stated above, that’s going to happen on a global scale.

LG Electronics’ unit shipments declined 9.7% year-over-year in Q4 2010. IDC says an aging portfolio and lower prices within emerging markets left the company vulnerable to the competition. ZTE is clearly among the key companies that are pressuring LG and Nokia in the feature phone segment.

LG’s answer to increased competition in the feature phone market is to bet on smartphones for Western markets. We reviewed the Quantum (Windows Phone 7) and Optimus T (Android 2.2) late last year. Upcoming smartphones include the Revolution, one of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE Android phones, as well as the NVIDIA Tegra 2-equipped Optimus 2X.

While Nokia and LG were forced to make cuts in overall unit shipments, there’s one big player that is still going strong: Samsung, of course, which saw a 17.3% increase in Q4 2010 unit shipments year-over-year.

Samsung is currently working on TouchWIZ 4 to run atop Android 2.2 and 2.3. The company will announce the Galaxy S2 during the Mobile World Congress next month, which will sport a dual-core processor and a Super AMOLED Plus display. The dual-core processor is rumored to be the NVIDIA Tegra 2.

IDC says that the continued success of the Galaxy S smartphones was driving the shipment volumes for Samsung last quarter. The company sold nearly 10 million units of those phones worldwide in 2010. The Verizon iPhone will soon challenge the Fascinate and Continuum, but Samsung has the Stealth V in the making for Verizon Wireless.

The Samsung phone that really shines, however, is the recently released Nexus S for T-Mobile (and rumored to spread to AT&T). It’s running stock Android 2.3, which combined with a Super AMOLED screen brings expectations for smartphones to a new level. If Samsung plays its cards right, Nokia should worry more about Samsung than Apple and ZTE.

The full-year numbers below reveals that RIM is also still going strong, and given the upcoming BlackBerry 6.1′s focus on third-party apps and improved Web browsing, in addition to its already well-known BlackBerry services, the Canadian manufacturer just adds to the fact that it is an intensely competitive mobile market indeed.

Nokia connecting Android or Windows Phone 7

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 29, 2011

OneIndiaNews, January 29, 2011- Helsinki, Jan 29: World’s largest mobile phone manufacturer Nokia is planning to take a revolutionary step after its disappointing Q4 2010 financial results. Media reported that Nokia has plans to adopt another popular operating system to make its handsets more attractive and acceptable.

Buzz up!While responding to queries, Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop said indirectly that the Finnish company may adopt operating systems like Google Android or Windows Phone 7. Analysts opinionated that Elop’s former connection with Microsoft may help him to connect his current company with former. If all things work well, we can expect Nokia smartphones running on Windows Phone 7 OS.

“In addition to great device experiences we must build, capitalise and/or join a competitive ecosystem. The ecosystem approach we select must be comprehensive and cover a wide range of utilities and services that customers expect today and anticipate in the future,” Elop said while commenting on Nokia’s financial figures.

Currently, Nokia handsets are running on Symbian and MeeGo operating systems. With the emergence of Android OS, other giants like Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson shifted to this and gained more popularity with a wide range of products. Also, Apple introduced energizing changes to their iOS that powers the iPhones. This lead to the decline of Nokia’s market share.

Now, Nokia has identified the need to change the ‘ecosystem’ for a better future. If Nokia decide to adopt Android or Windows, then it will be the end of Symbian, the world’s most popular mobile operating system. Anyhow let us wait and see whether Nokia axes Symbian to embrace Android or Windows phone 7.

Five Best Android Newsreaders

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 23, 2011

Lifehacker, Jan 23, 2011- Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite Android newsreader. We tallied up the nominations, and now we’re back to share the five most popular readers.

Google Reader (Free)

Google Reader, the long awaited official app from Google, took its sweet time getting to the Market. None the less, despite being on the Market for less than two months it’s one of the most popular RSS apps. It syncs seamlessly with multiple accounts and gives you access to the full subscription features like starring, marking as read, sharing, and more. Google Reader also includes some neat navigational features like the ability to use your phone’s volume rocker switch as a next and previous key for your RSS feeds.

FeedR ($1.99)

Many RSS tools piggyback on Google Reader. FeedR supports synchronization with Google Reader if you’re a fan but also supports plain old feed importing if you like to manually manage your feed and keep Google out of the loop. You can search and preview your feeds, read offline with images thanks to local caching, easily switch between the mobile and full view for articles, and more. FeedR’s design places emphasis on transparency; the UI stays out of your way which frees up valuable screen space for reading.

Pulse (Free)

Pulse was a popular contender in our iOS newsreader Hive Five thanks to its sleek layout and photo-centric swipe based reading style. The interface translates surprisingly well to Android phones. Pulse is the most social of the newsreaders in this roundup and includes the ability to stream your Facebook feed right along side your news feeds as well as share stories via Facebook, Twitter, , and email. You can start fresh with Pulse or import all your feeds from Google Reader.

NewsRob (Basic: Free/Pro:$6.84)

NewsRob syncs your Google Reader account to your Android phone for real-time and offline reading. NewsRob includes system wide notifications of new content, caching to the SD card for smoother reading, and the ability to mark as read, favorite, and edit feed categories. Upgrading to the premium version removes the ads and enables article sharing and article notation.

gReader (Basic: Free, Pro: $5.74)

Long before Google released and official read app, gReader was filling the niche. gReader sports two-way synchronization with Google Reader, offline reading, direct editing of your feed and folder settings from gReader, support for local caching and saving media from your feeds to your phone, offline reading, system notifications, and easy sharing via email, Twitter, Facebook, and more. The premium version removes the ads, and activates additional features like themes and widgets.

Why Android Users Are Such a Happy Lot

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 20, 2011

PCWorld, Jan 20, 2011- Smartphone users tend to hold strong opinions about the various mobile platforms out there, often displaying feverish loyalty to the one they use and outright disdain for all others. That’s particularly evident these days in the competition between iPhone and Android, of course, fueled by Android’s rapid ascendance in the marketplace.

There are clearly compelling reasons for using both platforms, or there wouldn’t be much reason for a “war” over which is best. British firm ICM Research, however, set out last fall to better understand Android users’ perceptions of their phones, and it recently published a white paper including the resulting data.

Based on a survey of more than 2000 U.K. consumers in October, ICM’s findings uncover some interesting insights about today’s Android users.

The Open Source Advantage

As I’m an advocate of open source software, the first statistic that jumped out at me was that a full 45 percent of the Android users polled by ICM said they chose an Android phone because it runs on open source software.

“Being open source it means it is quite social,” one respondent noted. “I like the idea of Google writing software and putting it out there and anyone can write apps for it.”

Android is not entirely open, of course, but such comments are still quite a testament, particularly in light of detractors’ recurring claims that the platform’s relative openness is somehow a problem or that it makes it less secure.

Sixty percent said Android phones offer more opportunities for customization, and 58 percent feel the platform’s handsets are more logical and intuitive to use, ICM reported.

No ‘Fragmentation Problem’ Here

Seventy percent of ICM’s respondents said that Android phones offer better value for the money, and 48 percent agree that an Android device is a better long-term investment than those on other platforms are. Sixty-one percent, meanwhile, said that the wide range of handset choices makes Android the best mobile platform.

So much, it seems, for suggestions that Android’s “fragmentation” is a problem.

Apps were a factor as well. Though a need for better categorization was frequently noted regarding the Android Market, 45 percent of current Android users said the market offers the widest range of apps and 43 percent felt the apps available for the platform are better than those created for other smartphones, ICM found.

In all, 67 percent of Android users surveyed said they would recommend the platform to their friends and family, according to the report.

Business Implications

Bottom line? Android users are a happy bunch, and that fact has implications for businesses large and small.

First and closest to home is that many of the same reasons Android users cite for their own satisfaction could be compelling arguments for business users to embrace the platform as well. As I’ve said before, Android’s flexibility, security and apps–among other factors–all make it particularly good for businesses.

A second key ramification here is that marketers and advertisers must not only have a mobile marketing strategy, but it must increasingly include Android users.

To wit: “The growth of Android means advertisers need to look beyond just having an iPhone app,” Alex Kozloff, mobile manager at the Internet Advertising Bureau UK, told Marketing Week recently. “Now it’s time to think across all platforms.”

Google Android Power Tips: Master Froyo and Gingerbread

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 19, 2011

PCWorld, Jan 19, 2011- “Froyo” and “Gingerbread”–two delicious treats that Android smartphone users around the world crave–are the latest versions of the Android mobile operating system. Both offer speed as their main selling point, but each has also come a long way from the original Android and spiffed up the user interface (Gingerbread in particular).

However, with great power comes great confusion. Although these editions of the Android OS make your smartphone more feature-rich than before, it’s not always obvious how to take advantage of the improvements.

Read on for a comprehensive list of the most compelling new features, plus tips and tricks. These items are specific to Froyo/Android 2.2 (which released last summer and runs on many phones, including the Motorola Droid X and the Samsung Epic 4G) as well as to Gingerbread/Android 2.3 (which came out in December and is currently available with the Samsung Nexus S).

And if your smartphone is running Gingerbread, then you’re in luck–the tips for Froyo also apply to you.

Fewer than 0.5% of Google Android users run Gingerbread, while 51.8% are on Froyo

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 18, 2011

Los Angeles Times, January 18, 2011- Only 0.4% of Android users are  running the newest version of Google’s mobile operating system, known  as Gingerbread.

That’s a pretty low number considering the millions of Android smart  phones and tablets that have been sold. But the number, released on  Google’s Android Developers website, makes a bit of sense considering  Gingerbread — also known as Android 2.3 — is available only on the  Nexus S smart phone from Samsung, and sold only in Best Buy stores.

Froyo, the build of Android released before Gingerbread, accounts for  51.8% of Android phones in operation, Google said.

And Eclair, the version before Froyo, is run on 35.2% of Android  devices, the Website reported. Android users running version 1.5 and  1.6 of the OS make up 12.6% of the phones in operation, Google said.

The update rates for Android users is held back, in part, by the fact  that Wireless carriers and not Google control when a specific handset  can get a new version of Android. Many older handsets have yet to  recieve software updates and likely won’t.

On the other hand, Apple’s iOS is pushed to iPhones by the company  itself and not by AT&T.

CEO David Lieb of app maker Bump Technologies said last week that  89.7% of iPhone and iPad customers are on iOS 4, a far larger  percentage than any one release of Android.

For more information, please visit  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2011/01/less-than-1-of-google-android-users-run-gingerbread-518-on-froyo.html.

Android will lead the mobile devices market

Posted by weinabeyondsoft on January 17, 2011

Inquirer, Jan 17 2011- ACCORDING TO the beancounters at analyst house Ovum, the mobile device market is set to boom over the next four years.

Over the period, mobile operating system battles will be fought for users’ hearts, minds and fingertips according to the analysts, but by the end one firm will stand out as the victor, albeit with a very slight margin.

Ovum said that the mobile devices market, by which we take it to mean tablets, which stood at around 14 million shipments a year at the end of 2010, is set to grow to 150 million by 2015, and while Apple will have some 35 per cent of the market thanks to its IOS-backed devices, Google’s Android will take 36 per cent.

This news is unlikely to be well received at One Infinite Loop, and not least because the firm currently dominates the market like some sort of fire breathing dragon with a 90 per cent share.

Tony Cripps, Ovum principal analyst said, “We believe that Apple constituted 90 per cent of the market in 2010. However, by 2015 we expect this market share to drop to 35 per cent and Google’s market share to rise to 36 per cent. Other software platforms, such as RIM’s Blackberry Tablet OS and HP’s WebOS, will find some success but between them all they will only account for 29 per cent of the market.”

Cripps said that the devices will be bought as companions to other hardware, such as smartphones, and added that it will be consumers that grab the most. He continued, explaining that since they are seen as garnish to the technological lifestyle, they are unlikely to affect other markets.

“The greater ease of use of smartphones for the majority of consumers means that shipments of the tablet and other ‘lite’ OS devices will not dramatically erode the growing demand for smartphones,” he said.

North American, European and Asia-Pacific users will be most tablet happy, according to Cripps, and it will be their willingness to download applications that will cement Google’s, and to a slightly lesser extent, Apple’s lead.

“Apple and Google will attract the most attention form the cream of the developers,” he explained. “As a result they will have the best, most talked about applications and content and, when all is said and done, this is what people will consider when making a purchasing decision.”
