GetJar announced 1 billion app download

Posted by BeyondSoftConsulting on June 8, 2010

SAN MATEO, USA and LONDON, UK, June 8, 2010 – GetJar (www.getjar.com), the world’s second largest app store, announced today that it has smashed through the 1 billion app download barrier. GetJar’s announcement comes as a landmark moment for the mobile industry as this is the first and only time that a cross-platform apps store has clocked over 1 billion downloads and second time ever for any app store to reach such a milestone.

The record-breaking, billionth download moment happened on June 7th at 11:02 AM  – Geodelic, an app that discovers restaurants, retailers and attractions nearby, was downloaded on an Android handset.

Ilja Laurs, CEO and founder, GetJar comments: “We’re delighted to have reached this milestone in mobile app history. As a team, we’re dedicated to driving the app market forward through an open approach. We’ve supported over 60,000 apps from developers across all major platforms, including Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian and our open philosophy has been integral to our continued growth and the development within the industry. We’re looking forward to the next billion downloads.”

Some Interesting GetJar Stats:

GetJar’s app store launched on March 23, 2004 and has rapidly grown in leaps and bounds, announcing in July 2009 that it had hit half a billion downloads – hot on the heels of Apple’s app store who had reached this only a few months earlier.

The first app ever to be uploaded on GetJar was ‘Just Yak’ – an app designed for the old Ericsson T610 mobile, on March 25, 2005.

The most downloaded app of all time on GetJar is Facebook’s mobile site shortcut, which provides a fast and easy way to access Facebook’s mobile website on nearly any handset or platform. It has been downloaded more than 61million times since launch late last year.

The most popular app is mobile messenger application, eBuddy, who recently surpassed a landmark 50 million downloads on GetJar with the help of GetJar’s Pay Per Download (PPD) mobile advertising service. Other popular apps include social networking and messaging apps Nimbuzz, Mig33 and Cncted, a mobile web browser – Opera Mini, Google, Yahoo! Mobile, and Fandango.

Over the last five years there have also been many surprise hits on GetJar, including the popularity of religious apps such as the ‘Bible’ app, which offers users access to the Bible’s entire contents through their mobile phone. It was downloaded more than 398,000 times in its first month alone. Islamic app ‘Azan’ has also proven a massive success, downloaded over 1.5 million times.

Dictionary, a simple app developed for feature phones by a sole developer in India, Vikrant Chavan, achieved over 3 million downloads since launch. Mig33 and Snaptu are also examples of small developer shops that were able to build their business and even get funding, partially due to their explosive growth on GetJar.

Over the past year, GetJar has tripled its headcount, quadrupled downloads per month and maintained its profitability despite a challenging economic environment.

Meet with ExtendLogic CEO at Mobile Forum: App Stores and Discovery by Telecomcouncil

Posted by BeyondSoftConsulting on March 17, 2010

App Stores were the big story for 2009, and growth and interest in that sector is sure to continue through 2010. But there are definite fractures in the generic app store’s foundations. The developers of mobile content are increasingly voicing growing dissatisfaction over likely obscurity, hyper-competition, shrinking margins, and that same bug-bear once again – fragmentation.

Research from one Telecom Council member reveals no fewer than 44 app stores emerged since 20083Q, with at least 7 more coming in 2010Q1. This leaves us with some questions to address:

  • What are the considerations for the app store operators (the carriers, handset vendors, OS makers, portals, etc.) as they try to carve themselves out a piece of this role?
  • Is it about revenue, or is it ownership of the relationship?
  • Can the industry possibly support this many storefronts?
  • What role does application discovery play?
  • Does discovery take place within a store, per the Amazon sales models, or across stores, per the Google search models?
  • Are there social networking solutions that can help sort through the 100,000+ apps out there?

For developers, a brief trend towards homogeneity has been halted, and tough decisions once again loom about the best path to market, getting noticed, and which app stores are most promising. What factors should developers be demanding of their channels? Are there differences between enterprise and consumer, between large and small ISVs? So many questions. At this meeting, you can learn best practices for answering them, communicate with your potential channel partners, spot trends, and make the connections that will get you to your next milestones.

This meeting is free for Telecom Council members, and $200 for non-members.

How will people in China download iPhone apps?

Posted by Mobile Innovation on March 9, 2009

Of cause, those one million folks in China who have  jailbreak iPhones will not download from the Apple app store. But where?

What I found out, lots of people are using an desktop tool to download illegal copies of English iPhone apps.

Here is an new idea: the competitor or App Store.

As the result, making money by selling games and small apps in China will face a challenge. ExtendLogic’s interest is to help app publishers to release their IPs free with embedded ads in it. The questions is, can it make enough money from the ads? Maybe not a big money for lots of developers, but better than nothing.
